Swing Machine at Music Center of the Northwest meets once a week, on Tuesday evenings. Swing Machine’s repertoire is quite broad including music from the “big band era” such as the music of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glen Miller, the Dorsey Brothers etc. We also explore more contemporary styles that have been adapted for big band from the libraries of the Beatles, Van Morrison, Bob Marley and others. Music from the Latin band leaders like Tito Puente and Mongo Santamaria are also studied rehearsed and performed. Much time is spent learning appropriate musical phrasing for each style. Big band music often includes sections for improvisation so materials and practices for the development of spontaneous melodic expression are regularly provided. Listening to recorded versions of the music Swing Machine covers is highly encouraged. Also students are urged to go out and listen to professional ensembles as often as possible for inspiration.

Swing Machine includes: Alto sax, tenor sax, bari sax, trombone, trumpets, piano, guitar, bass, drums.

Not sure if Swing Machine is a good fit for you? Contact the Music Center office at 206-526-8443 to arrange a time to check out rehearsal.
