Symphonic Stories
Concert
Sunday, March 18, 2012 at 2 pm
In March of last year, Dr. Glenna Burmer, a Music Center of the Northwest student and composer, was in Japan during the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Sendai. This experience motivated her to compose a symphonic work dedicated to the victims of the tsunami, and in collaboration with Tim Huling's Composition Lab, have produced a concert called Symphonic Stories that will feature seven original works by several of Seattle's top emerging composers. The concert will take place at Benaroya Hall on March 18, 2012 at 2 pm, and will feature Grammy-award winning conductor David Sabee. The concert will also feature the Silk Strings ensemble with Music Center koto teacher Shiho Kurauchi, and music by composers Eric Nielsen, Glenna Burmer, Tim Huling, Catherine Grealish, Eric Goetz, Barry Dowsett and Jeff Tolbert.
Music Center has established a fund to collect donations and proceeds from this concert to assist in the recovery of the Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra, which was devastated by the event. The dedicated musicians of the Sendai orchestra have performed over 200 concerts on street corners and in shelters to boost the spirits of the disaster survivors, and the orchestra needs assistance in its recovery.
Tickets to the event can be purchased through the Benaroya Hall ticket office. To make a donation, select Sendai Philharmonic Relief Fund on the Music Center's online donation/registration site.
You are invited to attend this concert as a show of support for your local composers and musicians, and to participate in the recovery of the Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra through your contributions.
